Janet: “This is why I weight train”
“I started this when I was 50 … it has been the greatest thing that I’ve ever done.”
I train because as you get older you just lose muscle tone. I know people that don’t do anything, and you see that they just lose so much muscle and their posture gets worse. I think it’s important that as we get older, we just stay strong.
I started this when I was 50 because I was scared of just not being fit, and I have been there for almost 12 years. It has been the greatest thing that I’ve ever done.
What I love is that I can go work out with my grandchildren and keep up.
Nancy: “I leave here and I feel like I really accomplished something”
“You want to wake up and feel good. I’d like to not rely on other people.”
You always think you’re fit until you start exercising and realize those muscles aren’t as strong as they need to be for good posture and just feeling good every day.
I’m a runner, but I realized I was missing the component of strength. Lifting is empowering for me. I feel good about it. I leave here and I feel like I really accomplished something. I’m stronger. I can see the difference.
The trainers here really know what they’re doing. It’s a very supportive, friendly, clean place.
Patty: Training to keep up with her grandson
“I’m 57. I’m in the best shape I’ve been in my life.”
My grandson was about to be born, so I knew that I wanted to try and keep up and do fun things with him. It was important to get ahead of the game, get strong and age more gracefully.
I feel stronger than I ever have. The other day I was doing some yard work and walking up the hill and didn’t get winded. It feels good to feel strong. It makes you feel like you can conquer most anything the day brings.
It’s always a very welcoming place. It’s very laid-back, but you still push each other.
Chris: Feeling better than he has in 10 years
“My shoulders, my hips and my lower back haven’t felt this good for 10 years.”
Over the last four or five years my hips always hurt, my knees hurt, my shoulders hurt. I just got fed up.
I feel stronger than I’ve felt in a long, long time. I’m on my feet all the time. It’s a very physical job. There were times I was thinking, I don’t know if I can do this anymore, and now I really feel like I’m fine.
I actually love it. I look forward to the workouts. I see my buddies and my friends at the workout, say hello and find out how they’re doing.

Pat: More energy, and the yard work gets done in a day
“Raking leaves used to take two days. I can do it in a day now.”
I had tried a different gym. I lasted ten weeks and didn’t like it. I felt like I really wasn’t getting much help, and I didn’t see any improvement.
Now I feel more energetic, more confident, more positive. Walking on trails, I find that I’m much more sure-footed.
It’s very comfortable, very personal. I’ve met many people there and heard about their kids and their grandkids. It’s just a fun, friendly group to work with. I would highly recommend it.
Molly: Stronger, and her running is better
“My posture is a lot better, my form is getting better, and I can go longer.”
I’m a runner, and that’s all I did for exercise. I’d heard that your upper body could help you with your running, so I thought maybe they could help me.
It’s really working. My upper body just doesn’t seem as tired or weak anymore, and my sleep is totally better.
If you have a problem with your knee or your back, just let them know and they will adjust the workout for you. It’s a caring, family-type place. They’ll be right with you all the way.
Michelle: “I never wanted to work out before”
“I want to go work out. I never wanted to work out before.”
I had recently lost a lot of weight and I wanted to keep the weight off. I worked a lot, and I needed something to get me out of work.
I feel healthier and I have more energy, and my sleep has definitely changed.
It’s like a family. It’s kind of like the TV show Cheers, where everybody knows your name. It really is a nice place to be, with caring people that will push you to be your best.
Derek: Keeping up with his kids
“They want to play soccer, and I go play soccer with them. That’s really important to me.”
I had never really worked out before. I wasn’t very healthy, and I wanted to be able to do stuff with my kids. My kids are 10 and 14 now.
I think working out has helped me do a lot of different things.

Madison: “I sat in my car for 15 minutes”
“The day I went in, I was super nervous. I sat in my car for like 15 minutes. But then I did go in, and I really never looked back.”
My story revolves around my dad. A few weeks before he passed away, we looked into joining a gym together, and then he passed away unexpectedly. I felt like I had to stick with it. It was kind of a promise I made to him, too. Eventually I just kept going, and it was more for me than anything else. I don’t regret it one bit.
I lost close to 50 pounds. I feel way better than I probably ever have, and I’m a lot stronger than I was in the beginning.
The atmosphere is almost contagious. Everyone has a reason why they’re there. We’re all trying to lift each other up.
Angie: Knowledge she can take anywhere
“I have this knowledge about movement and strength and form that I didn’t have before.”
I’ve been coming since it opened. The benefits I’ve gotten from it are measurable, not only because it transformed my body and I’m stronger, but because of what I learned about how to move, which I can take to any gym I ever go to.

“This gym is so unique. … you can actually hear yourself think instead of having to wear plugs because the music is so loud. … I really enjoy the trainers … if I ever leave Iowa city, my biggest … regret will be leaving this workout environment.”
